Two game-changers star in International Women’s Forum podcast

Two produce industry professionals are featured in the Game Changers podcast by Washington D.C.-based International Women’s Forum (IFW), talking about the COVID-19 crisis and its effect on food availability worldwide.

Available here after first airing May 7, the episode featured Karen Caplan, president and CEO of Frieda’s Specialty Produce, Los Alamitos, Calif., and president of IFW Southern California, and Karla Chambers, co-owner of frozen fruit and vegetable company Stahlbush Island Farms, Corvallis, Ore., and treasurer of IWF Oregon, according to a news release.

IWF is global network of more than 7,000 women leaders with a mission to “advance women’s leadership and champion human equity,” according to the release. Game Changers is a monthly podcast conversation with some of the trailblazing IWF members.

The women are policy makers, executives, pioneers and “instigators of change,” according to the release.

In the podcast, they share stories, lessons learned and insights. Caplan and Chambers discussed the global food supply chain.

“There is no shortage of food; it’s all about the logistics,” Caplan said in the release. “Because people are not traveling, not as many planes are available to fly freight to the U.S., and that has resulted in a challenged supply chain. We are seeing companies and organizations become so innovative right now, like the (U.S. Department of Agriculture) Farmers to Families Food Box program.”

Chambers expressed her gratitude to those in the industry.

“I am grateful for our hard-working employees who come to work every day and help ensure we are able to pack the fruits and vegetables we grow on our farms,” Chambers said in the release.
