Woodspur Farms, Coachella, Calif., which harvests 13 varieties of dates from late August until early November, had a record crop this year — up 6% from last year — said Tony Somohano, director of wholesale sales.

“We had a super-quality crop this year,” he said.

Organic dates are the company’s mainstay. In fact Woodspur Farms has 3,000 acres of organic dates, he said.

Somohano attributed the increasing popularity of dates largely to their nutrition benefits. Dates are considered a “superfood,” he said.

They’re a good alternative for sugar, have a low glycemic index and have soluble fiber that helps a person feel full.

“Moms are figuring out what a good product it is for kids, nutritionwise,” Somohano added.
