EPC presents Nolan scholarship via video
The Eastern Produce Council congratulated its 2020 EPC-Nolan Family Foundation scholarship winner through video because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jacqueline Giz received the $5,000 award remotely on May 19, the date the council’s annual barbecue at Demarest Farms, Hillsdale, N.J., would have been, according to a news release.
The foundation’s Theresa Nolan, EPC executive director Susan McAleavey Sarlund, and Giz’s uncle and EPC executive board member George Moskal participated in the presentation.
Giz will attend Rutgers University in the fall and will double major in art history and economics in a pre-law track.
“With so much disappointment in our world these past two months, and all that high school seniors have lost out on, I thought it was essential to celebrate the scholarship with Jacqueline on the actual day she would have been presented to our membership at the EPC’s barbecue. Congratulations Jacqueline: We wish you all the best with your college experience!” Sarlund said, according to the release.
The scholarship is based solely on a 500-word essay on how applicants responded to an ethical challenge. Applicants must be related to an EPC member who has been a member of the council for at least six months, and the anonymous essays are judged by representatives of the Nolan Foundation.
