National Watermelon Promotion Board offers facts, figures to retailers
The National Watermelon Promotion Board, or watermelon.org, offers a fun video and informative retail kit at its booth at the Nov. 9-13 West Coast Produce Expo.
The video took viewers through watermelon farming, cooking and eating set to music.
Also included in the booth was a 14-page retail kit with vivid images and facts on peak production and value, how to choose a melon, using the whole melon, flavor pairings, nutrition, consumer attitudes and usage, social media, cutting and yield, marketing tips, and sample ads.
Company leaders could even order free point-of-sale posters, guides and recipe cards straight from the booth.
Booth visitors also learned in the kit that 71% of watermelon is purchased in the grocery store, and 61% of shoppers say their children greatly or somewhat influence watermelon purchases.
Other facts included:
- One serving of watermelon has 25% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C;
- 52% of shoppers want to see information on health benefits at point of sale;
- 56% of consumers want to know how to choose a watermelon at point of sale;
- Shoppers rated watermelon an 8.2 out of 10 for health, with 10 the healthiest;
- 90% of consumers enjoy plain watermelon compared to used in recipes; and
- 33% don't buy watermelon because it's too big or inconvenient.
