Index Fresh, Riverside, Calif., wrapped up its California avocado season with record prices on a per-carton basis.
California and Mexico — which “undershipped” during June and July — had smaller crops, pushing prices higher, according to an Index Fresh news release.
“This helped shore up prices in California, especially in the last months of the season,” Giovanni Cavaletto, vice president of sourcing for Index Fresh, said in the release. “It was a short crop, so California finished in early September instead of October. The quality this season was outstanding. Index Fresh also picked up new growers, which is always great.”
Gerardo Aldunate, an agronomist who works with Index Fresh growers on cultural practices and productivity issues, also helps the company with its Seminar Series for growers.
“Growers will probably adjust their harvest (next season),” Keith Blanchard, California field manager for Index Fresh, said in the release. “There might be an earlier desire to start harvest, and implement size picking, and doing multiple picks rather than just one pick.”
