January marked Dinuba, Calif.-based Suntreat’s 12th year of Sumo Citrus sales. And the company continues to grow its volume of the proprietary mandarin, known for its bumpy outer peel and top knot.

With a greater volume of fruit coming off the trees, Suntreat recently launched some broader marketing campaigns.

New this year are 2- and 3-pound bags of Sumo Citrus. In addition, Suntreat’s Reserve Navels and I’m Pink Cara Cara orange varieties were refreshed this season, according to Emma Koehler, assistant brand manager at Suntreat .

A high volume of fruit and new packaging needs support on the retail side to complete the supply chain.

“With 12 years in the market, we have found that demos perform well, along with display contests to draw attention from consumers,” Koehler said. “To come alongside our retail partners, we also created a Sumo Citrus retail education app. The app includes product facts, best-handling practices and merchandising suggestions.”
