Desbry brand avocados add two-count bags, colorful displays

WP Produce, Miami, which grows and ships Desbry brand tropical avocados, has new retail pouch bags and displays for the green-skinned fruit.

The pouches are part of a “comprehensive, value-added merchandising program” that also includes signs, recipe tear pads and colorful display bins on for the tropical fruit, according to a news release.

The pouches and merchandising address changing preferences caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with shoppers buying more packaged produce. Retailers are also unable to provide samples to shoppers.

"Since retailers aren’t doing in-store sampling, our bags and bins provide retailers with an alternative — using visual, virtual sampling by showing beautiful slices of cut fruit, plus recipes and tips for use, to catch shoppers’ attention and promote sales," Chris Gonzalez, vice president of sales for WP Produce, said in the release. "The two-count bags are convenient for shoppers and give retailers a way to demonstrate how responsive they are to rapidly changing consumer preferences."

While consumers are purchasing more bagged produce during the pandemic both from convenience and due to a food safety perception, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food.”

"These in-store displays of bagged Desbry tropical avocados in bins definitely turn shoppers’ heads and provide retailers a turnkey way to implement a category extension and keep growing profits with avocados," Karen Nardozza, president and CEO of Moxxy Marketing, said in the release.

WP Produce is sharing recipes and tips on Instagram and through a partnership with The Produce Moms, according to the release.

Desbry tropical avocados are grown in Florida and the Dominican Republic and are available year-round.
