Cinco de Mayo, other spring holidays, lift hass avocado sales

Led by Cinco de Mayo sales that reached a four-year high, hass avocado retail sales for holidays in the second quarter of 2020 hit record highs.

The Hass Avocado Board, which tracks retail sales of the fruit by events and holidays, reported that Easter, Cinco de Mayo and Memorial Day generated $200 million in retail sales. The board releases the quarterly reports on its website, hassavocadoboard.com, to provide retailers and the industry with insights to consider when planning holiday promotions, according to a news release.

The report includes information on these holidays:

  • Easter: Sales of $63.1 million during the week leading up to Easter Sunday were up 35% in dollars and 49% in volume since 2017. From the previous Easter, dollar sales were up 16% and unit sales were up 22%.
  • Cinco de Mayo: Sales are typically strong because of heavy use of hass avocados in a variety of dishes. Dollar sales have grown every year, hitting a four-year high this year, at $68.7 million. Sixty-five million units were sold for the holiday, according to the HAB.
  • Memorial Day: Consumer purchases leading up to Memorial Day hit record sales, with an increase of $10.6 million in dollar sales, an 18% lift, to $68.1 million, according to the Hass Avocado Board. Volume sold increased 39%, to 59.7 million units.
