Pecan acreage increases in Arkansas

Among fruit and tree nuts, pecan acreage rates are at the top of the heap in Arkansas.

Among fruit and tree nuts, pecan acreage rates are at the top of the heap in Arkansas.

The 2017 Census of Agriculture reported commercial pecan acreage in the state totaled 7,936 acres, up 31% from 6,054 acres in 2012.

Bearing and non-bearing grape acreage in 2017 totaled 956 acres, compared with 919 acres in 2012.

Arkansas apple acreage, including bearing and non-bearing, totaled 283 acres in 2017, down slightly from 296 acres in 2012.

Here are the top fruit items in 2017, compared with 2012:

  • Apples (bearing and non-bearing): 283 acres, down 4% from 2012;
  • Blackberries: 501 acres, up 4% from 2012;
  • Blueberries: 356 acres, up 15% from 2012;
  • Strawberries: 88 acres, up 40% from 2012;
  • Grapes (bearing and non-bearing, including wine grapes): 956 acres, up 4% from 2012;
  • Peaches (bearing and non-bearing): 669 acres, down 1% compared with 2012;
  • Pecans: 7,936 acres, up 31% from 6,054 acres in 2012;and
  • Peaches (bearing): 525 acres, up 10% from 2012.
