South Africa looks to summer citrus plans

In Citrusdal, South Africa, members of Summer Citrus from South Africa have made plans for the summer season of U.S. imports.

The group plans to increase sales of easy peelers and mandarins while driving demand through promotional plans with retail partners, according to a news release.

The organization’s overall 2019 goal is to increase market share in the U.S.

Seald Sweet CEO Mayda Sotomayor-Kirk stressed the importance of sustainability practices and logistics solutions by the group’s farmers, according to the release.

Members are looking forward to a season of no water restrictions after a three-year drought ended. The exporters have faced many challenges over the last 20 years with a successful model of collaboration, said Suhanra Conradie, CEO of Summer Citrus from South Africa.

“What some view as a group of competitors, both on the production and importing side of our business, must be viewed as a collaborative effort with one mission in mind,” Conradie said in the release — to supply the U.S. with a stable supply of quality citrus in the summer.

Summer Citrus from South Africa will be celebrating its 20th year supplying the U.S. at the Viva Fresh Expo in San Antonio, with a Champagne toast at 2:30 p.m. April 27, at booth No. 34.
